Other information:

Speculation on Phoebe: Phoebe birth pre 1764 if 18 at marriage - if so estimate last child bearing would be 1804 at est age 40. If older at marriage, this date reduces. Mary est b 1798, Rosanna est b 1799 and to have another child before 1804 to be the missing male 0-10 above would be difficult. Speculation on the source of the name Phoebe “her name was the french version "Fabeola" her nickname was Phoebe...” In searching for nicknames for Phoebe like Patsey (see guardianship) none found.

Speculation on James and Phoebe deaths: Looking at 1820/1830 probable sons census in OH, no provision for old man James, and only probable son James has a 45+ woman in his household, could be Phoebe, could be mother in law, could be whomever, no documentation, but no indication of a Phoebe death/tombstone. Speculate James died before 1820 census which if born 1762, 20 yrs before marriage, would mean he could have lived to be 58. Inclined to believe James died circa 1813 in VA before the OH migration because of the land sales, closer to 50. Reason being the 1811 guardianship and the 1812-13 land sales and the dropping off the personal and land tax rolls circa 1813-1815. Speculate Phoebe died before 1830 census, which would potentially mean she could have lived to 68, both of which were long lives at the time for the circumstances, particularly migrating at their age. Est children b 1782-1800 means having children from 20-38 which is not unreasonable

Speculation on land transactions: Purchases of 60 A in 1789 by James Shastead and 100 in 1799 by James. Sales of 130 A by James Shastead Sen subsequently filed 1832 in a suit then the 1812 sale of 100 A by James Shartead JR & WIFE PHOEBE. This leads me to believe that James Sen may have been the older James Sharstead b circa 1730 (see 1748 and 51 sales and James “Buff”) who was the father of James “J River” (James Jr. married Phoebe). This also provides a theory for the apparent acquisition of 160 acres of land and the sales of 230. The 133 Robert was taxed on appears to be 133 that Senior sold (and let Robert farm if he paid the taxes?), who might have had it in addition to land sold in 1751 to Cabell. (Note the east side of the Tobacco Row Mountains puts this property close to the present day city of Amherst rather than by Otter Creek). This theory leaves Jesse and James “Pedlar” as some sort of cousins, James “Buff” as James Sen with prior land holdings, James “J River” as his son that married Phoebe and James Jr b circa 1785 as the grandson of James “Buff and son of James “J River”. Issues - Senior “Buff” exempt because of age on taxes tax 1792?

Speculation on 1811 guardianship: James Shasteen appt guardian for Patsey Chaskey (assume Shasteen) with Abner Padgett (Phoebe’s relative, maybe father prob brother, involved) probably related to death of James Sen (the father) and could be for his wife for infirmness or for business transaction purposes as all the land was sold shortly thereafter. Doubt this was for Phoebe though as Phoebe was involved in the 1812 100 A sale of Shartead James, Jr. & wife Phoebe. More likely for a minor or aged mother/mother in law. No idea on who Patsey is, why Padgett is involved, and why Robert is mentioned at all in the document. Is interesting coming just the year before they sold out and left. NEED TO REVISIT LIBRARY TO LOOK AT DEED/WILL/PROBATE BOOKS SOMEDAY!! A filed will could explain many things!!

VA checking on “Shasteen related” names: Search of index of 1790 and 1800 VA property taxes - (1) Nancy Kennedy (Cannady) that married James Shasteen bro of Jesse - John and James Kennaday and John Kennedy in Wythe and Henrico Fauquier Cos 1799/1800/02 personal property tax rolls. Some John Cannaday’s in Franklin and Fauquier 1799 pers prop.John Kennedy Jr in Amherst 1790 pers prop, no John Cannadys.
