Remains of Former Stevens Point Lady Brought Here For Burial

Mrs. Elizabeth Packard, widow of William H. Packard, who was for many years prominent in legal and political circles in this county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hattie Biegler, at Hayward last Thursday morning. Mrs. Packard had suffered three strokes of paralysis in the past two years, the last one on the Monday preceding her death.

Although born in Vermont, Mrs. Packard, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Beach, spent practically all of her life in Wisconsin. She came to this state in her girlhood years and was married at Oasis on February 28, 1853, to William H. Packard. They came to Stevens Point the same year and remained until about 30 years ago, since which they resided at Hayward and Washburn. Mr. Packard died at the latter city on April 18, 1899. During his residence here Mr. Packard was district attorney for three terms, city clerk and register of deeds, as well as the occupant of other public offices.

Mrs. Packard was 79 years of age last June 3. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Biegler, with whom she resided for four years, she leaves the following children: John Packard, Victoria, B.C.; Mrs. E. J. Palmer, Chemainus, B.C.; Mrs. C. E. Bell, Grand Forks, N.D.; George Packard, Knoxville, Pa.; William Packard, St. Paul, and C. H. Packard, of this city.

The remains were brought to Stevens Point last Saturday morning, following Congregational services at Hayward the preceding afternoon. The services here was conducted at the residence of C. H. Packard, 328 Water Street, at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon by Rev. F. L. Hayward, pastor of St. Paul's M. E. church. Burial was in the family lot in Forest cemetery. The pall bearers were Robert Maine, S. E. Karner, W. W. Mitchell, J. W. Strope, John Leahy and George F. Hebard.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Hattie Biegler, Hayward; Mrs. C. E. Bell, Grand Forks, N. D.; Mr. and Mrs. William Packard, St. Paul; George Packard, Knoxville, Pa.; and Mrs. James Beach, Appleton. All returned to their homes Saturday night except George Packard, who remained until last night.
