(2) WHHS brother is James C. who married Margaret Alice Brink and then Catharine Creviston and served in the CW with brother Francis Marion Shasteen and after the war moved to IL (with Co K soldiers/cousins Lewis and Edward) died and was buried in Bement IL 1906. (3) Someone in eagerness to credit soldiers assumed the James buried in Springbank (circa Jul 1893 - have copy gov’t contract) was the James of Company K even tho the birth date did not jive with the muster age. The James in Bement Cemetery is actually the soldier, his dob being 1834 which matches with the age of 27 at enlistment, as do all the others. What this assumption does not take into account is neither WHHS or others in the community took issue, so perhaps both of them served. No reason to contact the church apparently as the records were burned circa 1920. Lee Fenner hfenner89@sbcglobal.net - I have the complete set of books that contain the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the Civil War. The 89th is in Vol. 7 and in Company K or for that matter in the entire regiment only one James Shasteen listed. Also the muster rolls in the Ohio Historical Center support there only being one James. As far as the timing between leaving the regiment and transferring into the VRC, I think that is in line with other cases. It seems common to allow for time so the soldier can have a chance to recover sufficiently to be returned to his regiment. When that proved no longer possible, then if at all able for some sort of duty, they were put in the VRC. So I believe there is only one James, but don’t know enough to comment on the initial or the difference in birth/death dates. There was a James A Shasteen that was 18 when enlisting, but that was later in the war and with Co G, 163rd, 12 May to 10 Sep 64, and Co B, 184th, 11 Feb to 20 Sep 65. (Site Source: The information in the rosters came from many sources. Most of it came from: Roster Commission. Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of Rebellion, 1861-1866, Vol VII. Cincinnati: The Ohio Valley Press, 1888. Joseph B. Foraker, late of Company A, was the governor of Ohio when this volume was published. Other sources included: Ohio Graves Registration (Ohio Historical Center), Ohio Death Certificate Index (Ohio Historical Center), County Probate Court Records, Pension Records/Letters, Newspapers, Cemetery Records, and Cemetery Visits. If a field is empty, there was no information available. Age is at the time of mustering; for almost all the soldiers, this was August 1862.) RDS email 5-08 to NPS & Ohio Genealogical Society - I believe you have an error in the Ohio 89th Infantry Co. K for James Shasteen and James C. Shasteen. I have corresponded with a gentlemen that has researched this and from Muster rolls agrees there was only one James Shasteen in the company. His records are at http://www.89thohio.com/Roster/K%20Company_1.html. Also, this man states the muster rolls in the Ohio Historical Center also suppor only one James Shasteen being in Co K of the 89th. Can you research and resolve this issue? - Thanks Ray Shasteen - Response from OGS - Thank you for contacting the Ohio Genealogical Society regarding the database of Ohio Civil War soldiers. - The database on the OGS site as well as the database on the National Park Service site came from the Index to Compiled Service Records. The index cards were created in the late 1800s to facilitate finding service records for veterans applying for pensions. Because of this, the clerks at the time were instructed to make a new card for each way that the name appeared on the monthly or bi-monthly muster rolls. It is quite common for a man to have more than one card -- once with a middle name or initial and once without. (Some men have multiple cards due to various spellings of their first name or surname.) Thus, it is quite possible, and indeed probable, that the entries for James C. Shasteen and James Shasteen of Company K, 89th OVI refer to one and the same man. - Amy Johnson Crow, Webmaster, Ohio Genealogical Society May 22, 2008 webmaster@ogs.org James C.
