Note | At age 14, began his studies of optics and lens in Berlin. Furthered his education in Jena, Austria and Paris, France. At age 16, in 1891, he made a new kind of contact lens, for which he received a patent. Immigrated to the USA in 1892 and settled in New Jersey. Became an optometrist. Married Bridget, had one son, Edwin, and then Bridget took ill. Max institutionalized Bridget and placed Edwin with the Granvilles to raise him. Max divorced Bridget. Later married one of his patients, Nellie Hughes. Accepted an offer from George Wells, owner of American Optical Co. and moved the family to Stockbridge, MA on 11 Sep 1911. |
